Some of my clients are getting a bit confused at my new upload form on my website. I’m now using an application called Bounce Boss, and its great because it is an intelligent audio collaboration tool, plus it gives everyone the ability to upload different versions like stems, references, final mixes and masters. We can comment and go back and forth about files. I made this video this week to go over how to use it and upload your files to me for mixing and mastering projects.
This week we are going to discuss gain staging and why this is the most critical thing you need to pay attention to. I had a big discussion with one of my clients about this so I created this video. The tricky thing is gain staging applies literally everywhere, from recording, to mixing and mastering. I discuss and share examples of how you need to properly gain stage in your DAW and what you need to do before sending your tracks for mastering so your gain staging is proper.

This week I get into the topic of audio dithering. Do you know what dithering is? Are you incorrectly using because you don’t even know it’s on. Do you even know that it’s happening if you do a certain thing? Do you know when you need to use it? All these questions answered! If you’re a music producer learn three rules to follow when it comes to dithering in music production.
Ever ask yourself is mastering necessary? Are you releasing tracks without professional mastering? Likely you won’t be getting the best results. For example, your tracks are likely not competing with other professional tracks on the market. Another example, your tracks might not be getting the polish and sheen they need to sound like a quality production. Check this video out for a quick look at what mastering can do for you!
Please do not send me MP3’s and learn why they are not good for mastering. I often get MP3s sent by clients for free samples and I decided to create this video to share why I will not master MP3s.
MP3s are heavily degraded in quality. First I quickly explain what an MP3 is with a Wikipedia definition. Then I go into what files are acceptable to send to me as an MP3. Lastly, I share how what happens when you convert to an MP3 with phase cancellation.
This is a perfect example of what happens every time you convert to an MP3 so imagine converting multiple times. You only want to convert to an MP3 once after the mastering stage. Check out the video to learn more.
