Why You’re Not Bad at Mixing — You’re Just Too Early
When I first started producing, I thought every track needed EQ and compression. I assumed that’s what professionals did, so I followed the same rules without questioning them.
The problem wasn’t that I was wrong—it was that I was doing things too early.
One of the biggest mistakes I see producers make is trying to fix problems with plugins instead of addressing the source. If the sound selection is off, no amount of EQ will truly fix it. If your levels aren’t balanced, compression won’t magically make things sit better.
Over time, I realized that mixing is less about tools and more about decision-making.
Now, my workflow is simple:
Start with the right sounds, balance levels, then apply EQ or compression only if needed.
This shift alone can dramatically improve your results.
If you want to take your mixes to the next level, focus less on plugins and more on timing, intention, and clarity.
